Career Exploration

What is a Job Shadow?

Job Shadowing is a highly engaging career exploration and workforce development resource for secondary and postsecondary students and jobseekers. Students have the chance to shadow off-campus at the company's location to tour, speak with employees, and get hands-on experiences at potential future careers. We also bring industry experts into the classroom for demonstrations to share their knowledge regarding careers in their field.

What is an Internship?

Internships are semester-long, paid or unpaid, employment opportunities that provide invaluable hands-on experience in a student's selected field of interest as well as a chance to connect with mentors. Students earn elective credit towards their high school graduation requirements while gaining knew knowledge and skills. They should work approximately 60 hours a semester to earn .5 Elective Credits. Internships are typically encouraged for juniors and seniors given transportation requirements.

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are two-year paid employment opportunities. Beginning the summer between junior and senior year, students attend a two-day training to jump start their full-time employment for the summer. When their senior year starts, students work approximately 100 hours throughout the semester, and then following graduation they are guaranteed full-time employment for the next year. ECSD's apprenticeship program is offered in conjunction with CareerWise through Vail Valley Partnership, and students earn elective credit toward their high school graduation requirements.

What is Miscellaneous Workplace Experience?

Miscellaneous Workplace Experience is another way for students to earn elective credit through employment. Juniors or seniors in high school who already have a job can submit approximately 90 hours per semester along with an additional project to earn .5 Elective Credits. This program is a way to value the time and skills students are already learning outside of school. Please note: this option is only applicable for students who already have a job. ECSD does not help place students in a job through this program.

Student Opportunities

We have apprenticeship, internship, job shadow, and employment opportunities for high school students. Students interested in any of these options should connect with the CareerX team member at their school to assess their interests and determine the right opportunity for them.
