Postsecondary Learning & Career Readiness

Eagle County School District's Postsecondary Learning & Career Readiness (PLCR) Department supports students in career exploration and college readiness based on their interests and plans for a successful future.

There are a variety of pathways available to meet the needs of each student, with consideration for the demands of an evolving economy and workforce. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests and think about their futures at all grade levels, increasing in detail and reality as students mature. Just as there are building-block approaches to learning a new language or a subject like math, preparing a student to make informed choices for one's career path is strengthened by the multi-year Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP).

The content available on this website is not a substitute for the work our department and school sites do, but rather a brief introduction to our work. Our school teams are vital in providing support and school-specific content for families and students. Elementary Level – Awareness

At the elementary level, the focus is about broadening awareness of future career options and opportunities. It is not too young to introduce new and unique career opportunities to engage a child's mind for their futures.

We do this is through Career Talks and career exploration through community connections. This largely involves guest speakers in schools, which exposes students to careers they may not have even be aware existed.

Middle School Level – Early Exploration

At the middle school level, students are supported in self-discovery and exploration through the introduction and use of our college and career readiness platform, Xello. This helps students know themselves better, connect their interests to career clusters, explore different careers, and learn from leaders in their field of interest.

We also introduce students to their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) to help create a smooth transition to high school and their postsecondary pathway. In eighth grade, all students attend our annual Career Expo to interact with industry experts and local businesses to explore the possibilities.

High School Level – Exploration & Planning

In high school, students have a multitude of options and resources to help them reach their postsecondary goals. Students continue working in Xello to develop and refine their interests and future plans. As part of this process of finding a good fit for postsecondary plans, students are highly encouraged to visit and evaluate different postsecondary options. We offer career exploration opportunities, and encourage students to attend our annual Career Expo and Work Week events.
